Provincial Planning for Particular Resources

The Government of British Columbia is responsible for planning for and managing activity on the 95% of the province that it owns.  In addition, the provincial government has the power to pass laws over various types of resource extraction and over other matters which can have an impact on watershed management.  Consequently, the province plays a major role in planning and legislating for watershed management.

Planning related to Watershed Management can take various forms.  Strategic Planning sets the broad goals that society expects on its land.  Operational planning sets out how a particular use or area will be managed to meet particular goals.  This page is concerned with operation plans that the provincial government initiates or requires for various resources or industries.

The provincial government has some type of operational planning requirements in place for:

·         Agriculture

·         Coastal zones

·         Drinking Water Protection

·         Electric power generation (also deals with water flow)

·         Endangered Species (Recovery Planning)

·         Fisheries

·         Forestry & Range

·         Parks

·         Pesticide Use

·         Storm water

·         Waste Management (Liquid Waste)

·         Waste Management (Non-point Source Pollution)

·         Waste Management (Municipalities)

·         Water Supply (Community Watersheds)

In addition, there are several types of planning (operational and strategic) carried out by local governments.  Although this is dealt with on a separate Guide page, local governments are a creation of the provincial legislature.
