Since 1998, West Coast Environmental Law has been reaching out to
the Chinese community, one of the largest and fastest growing
communities in the Lower Mainland. Over one-quarter of Vancouver's
population, and over one-third of Richmond's, reports Chinese as
their mother tongue. Not only is the community growing, it is
increasingly diverse. Now, with our concerns about maintaining the
high quality of life in the Lower Mainland, issues such as traffic,
air pollution, water quality and food safety become more important.
The Chinese community cares about health and the environment, for
themselves and their children, and needs more information available
in Chinese.
As part of our Environmental Citizenship program, Building
Bridges aims to meet these needs to help the Chinese community get
informed and get involved. Under this program, West Coast produced a
Chinese and Vietnamese brochure about fishing laws in BC. We also
produced Chinese pamphlets on topics including air quality, water conservation, household hazardous waste
and recycling. Our current
work includes:
- Chinese community events - look for our information
tables
- Chinese newsletter - look for an upcoming newsletter
highlighting our services
- Climate Change Awareness - look for upcoming information on
global warming and climate change in Chinese newspapers
- Environmental radio program - West Coast and AM 1320 CHMB
radio are providing "environmental protection tips",
including recycling and energy conservation
- Environmental Law & Citizenship - West Coast is working
with SUCCESS, Immigrant Services Society of BC and other groups,
to create an English language training curriculum for newcomers
Since 1974, West Coast Environmental Law has been BC's champion
for the environment. West Coast empowers individuals and community
groups to protect our environment through legal education, legal
aid, legal research and advocacy on environmental law and policy.
West Coast provides free legal advice and representation on
environmental issues, and we provide money to help community groups
act on environmental concerns. Let us know how we can help you get
involved.
